Blue Happy Birthday

Today is my little brother James' birthday and he's turning 6. Happy birthday little guy!

Someone quoted something the other day that really made me think.

The quote went something like this:
"You don't just wash dishes to get them clean, you wash them because you love the next person who's going to use that dish."
And that just hit me like wow. The little things we do - we should do them out of love. Love for the other people in our lives.

Maybe we don't mind when the floor hasn't been swept, but don't you think the other people do mind? So, we sweep the floor, not because we want to, or maybe not even because we care if it's clean or not, but because we love that other person who likes it when the floor is swept.

We don't mind if our own room is a mess, but maybe someone else does. So, we try to keep our room a little more tidy, not because we want to but because we love the other person.

Here's a strange fact: love for someone else will make us want to do things to please him.

Now, obviously there's great reasons to keep places around you clean, and it's harder to live in a place that's always a mess, but let's be real here for a minute: if you were the only one living in an apartment, would you clean as often as you do now?

So, we do the mundane things - clean the bathrooms, make meals, do dishes - all out of love.

At least, I think that's probably the best motivation.

Because it's focused on someone else, and not on you.
